After re-discovering cycling in 2011 I was lucky enough to take part in the first RatRace Adventures London to Edinburgh ride. Once I'd recovered enough from this trauma, I looked for the next Big Adventure!!
This came in the shape of the iconic LEJOG (Lands End to John O'Groats) a supported tour with ACT Cycling Tours based in Bury St Edmunds. The group travelled over 1000 miles across the country over 13 days. Some life-long friendships were formed on the way (more of which can be seen at https://www.youtube.com/@captaincentury7751 )
After our first tour, a group of 6 decided more tours were needed.....
Our next challenge was The Lake District. This formed our "training" for bigger things to follow in the year, with sections of the famous Fred Whitton Challenge included across our 3 day visit, it was safe to say, we wouldn't find anything more challenging in Spain!!
October saw us in The Pyrenees for our second tour with Martyn at ACT. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. His set-up, routes and support were just what we needed to get us from the Atlantic coast, through the Spanish side of the Pyrenees to the Mediterranean Sea.
We were not stopping there!!
Next was our group tour of North Wales, mountains, great weather (surprisingly!), great roads and a few sheep!!
During the evening hydration sessions our next European Tour was hatched, Italy was in our sights.......
Another ACT Tour, this time from the beauty and history of Pisa (with a quick detour to dip our wheels in the Med) we took a meandering rout through miles of vineyards, the Tuscan Strade Bianche and eventually arrived in Ancona.
A few diary failures and a Global Pandemic has hampered our plans over the last few years, but we will be back!!
Way back in 2010 (8th October to be precise) Aero Cycles opened their doors. For the first few months Steve Foster was running the shop part time, then in June 2011 he went for it!! Assisted by Rorie they worked the shop and later that year they opened a market stall on Haverhill Market every Saturday to get a bit more exposure to the good people of Haverhill. Things went from strength to strength for many years, and the team built a solid following with local cyclists.
In fact Steve, Rorie and the shop riders were instrumental in setting up Haverhill Cycling Club in 2012.
After 13 happy years, and an increasingly changing and challenging market, Steve decided to move to pastures new and start a new challenge. And in January 2023 closed the doors for the last time. A very sad day!
After much thought and in an effort to keep local club cyclists on the move with a local option I spoke to Steve regarding the future of the workshop facilities, and before you knew it a deal was struck!!
That brings us to today, as Steve did in the early days of Aero Cycles, I am starting small, by working shop days on Wednesday, Saturday and evenings by appointment. Lets see where this takes us!
